Without Space
|
Without Space is a video installation where two corners are confronted creating a straight line of visual communication between the two faces that form the installation. On each corner it is placed a hollow mask where it is also being projected a video of a face (the face of the co-authors of the work). Both faces are looking one at each other, absorbed in a continuous visual communication. When a viewer enters this space inhabited by these two people, interrupts their privacy but also joins their visual relation, taking part in a peculiar fabric of staring gazes. The project is based on the hollow face optical illusion, in which, by having projection of a face over a concave face shape instead of a convex one, makes the viewers perceive that the mask is constantly staring at them. Without Space takes base on the gaze’s matter and its subtle strength as creator of spaces and invisible boundaries between these and the public spaces that surround them. As the viewers enter the installation space, they are incorporated into the masks’ visual communication, creating a complex weave of gazes. The previous dichotomy between public and private spaces (inside/outside) becomes blurred; a kind of hybrid space difficult to define is produced, where intimate gazes could turn into scrutinizing sights, or where the viewer could be integrated in the space’s visual communication. Project in collaboration with Casilda Sanchez.
